Master of Social Work (MSW) (One year) (SLQF 9) Degree Programme

The Master of Social Work (MSW) one year degree programme, coursework provides theoretical knowledge and analytical skills of subject matters and skills required to deal with practical issues and problems in the relevant field. A student will generally be awarded the MA degree (by coursework) on successful completion of thirty (30) credits from courses and a guided project. It’s aims to produce professionally qualified and managerially competent manpower to service the social welfare system and thereby promote Social development.

This program is designed to provide advanced knowledge in social work encompassing a qualitative shift from knowledge acquisition to the development of analytical skills, critical appraisal and production of knowledge through critical inquiry. It will provide clear leadership and expertise to professional practitioners and persons in managerial positions. 

Objectives of the Master of Social Work (MSW)

The main objective of the Master’s programme in Social Work is to meet the demand in the public and private sectors for upgrading the competencies of graduates/ other equally qualified individuals already engaged in social work and to provide opportunities to graduates from other disciplines and other equally qualified personnel to obtain advanced knowledge in social work in order to meet the urgent need for professional social workers in the country at the managerial level.
 

Upon successful completion of the Master’s degree programme in Social Work the participants will be equipped with;

• A critical understanding of the body of knowledge and research in social work
• Analytical and conceptual skills leading to the production of knowledge in social work and social development
• Advanced knowledge in social work related organizational managerial strategies
• Academic and professional skills required to perform as managers, planners and policy makers in social work, social welfare and social development

Medium - Sinhala/Tamil/ English

The minimum admission requirements are;

• A Bachelor’s degree from a University or from a recognized higher education institution with a first or second class (Hons) or
• A Bachelor’s degree from a University or from a recognized higher education institution with an ordinary pass and a minimum of a one year post-graduate diploma or
• A Bachelor’s degree from a University or from a recognized higher education institution and a minimum of three years post-qualifying experience working in social welfare organization (s)or
• A professional qualification equivalent to a Bachelors degree consideration a case by case basis by the NISD on the recommendation of the Board of Graduate Studies and a minimum of three years of post-qualifying experience working in social welfare organization.
