
15th Convocation and Diploma Awarding Ceremony – 2025
The National Institute of Social Development (NISD) proudly held its 15th Annual Convocation and Diploma Awarding Ceremony on 27 November 2025 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH), Colombo. The event marked a significant milestone in the institute’s academic calendar and celebrated the achievements of students who successfully completed their studies in social work and related disciplines.
The ceremony was graced by several distinguished guests, including Dr. Upali Pannilage, Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment; Mr. Sampath Mantrinayake, Secretary to the Ministry and Chairman of the NISD Governing Council; Senior Professor Premakumara de Silva, Director General of NISD; members of the Governing Council; members of the Academic Affairs Board; academic and non-academic staff; graduates; and their parents.
The convocation address was delivered by Professor Kalinga Tudor Silva, Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the University of Peradeniya, who presented an insightful keynote speech titled “Social Work as a Potential Driver of Educational Reforms in Sri Lanka.” His address highlighted the vital role of social work in shaping national educational transformation and strengthening community wellbeing.
At this convocation, 87 Master of Social Work (MSW) graduates and 140 Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) graduates were formally conferred their degrees. In addition, 315 diploma holders received their diplomas at the Diploma Awarding Ceremony, marking another successful year of academic excellence and professional capacity-building at NISD.
The 15th Convocation and Diploma Awarding Ceremony reflected NISD’s continued commitment to producing skilled, compassionate, and academically grounded social work professionals dedicated to serving communities across Sri Lanka.
