About us
The Library of the National Institute of Social Development (NISD) is a specialized academic library dedicated to supporting education, research, and professional training in the fields of social work, social sciences, and community development. As an essential knowledge center of the Institute, the library plays a significant role in enhancing academic excellence and promoting evidence-based learning among students, lecturers, researchers, and staff members.
The library maintains a valuable collection of printed and digital resources, including books, academic journals, theses, dissertations, research reports, government publications, and online databases relevant to social development studies. Through these resources, the library contributes to the advancement of knowledge and innovation in areas related to social welfare, human services, and sustainable development.
The NISD Library is committed to creating an inclusive and user-friendly learning environment by providing modern facilities, reference services, information literacy programs, and access to digital technologies. It continuously develops its services to meet the changing information needs of the academic community.
To further improve accessibility and convenience, the NISD Library webpage serves as an online platform where users can obtain information about library services, opening hours, new arrivals, digital resources, and announcements.
The library was started in 1973 with the establishment of the institution and today has a collection of over 20,000 items and is also undergoing automation. Today, the library operates a central library in addition to the main branch.

SERVICES OFFERED
Reference Service
The main library provides the following facilities for reference. Reading rooms and Student discussion room.
Borrowing Facility
NISD Staff and students are entitled to borrow books from the library after obtaining the library membership.

Circulation Services
Circulation Services provides prompt and friendly service to the community of the NISD in lending library materials.
Additionally, staff members are responsible for handling inquiries, answering questions, maintaining the collections, and study spaces.
Book Reserving Facility
Reservation facility is available for any registered member. Contact library counter staff to reserve a book (0112256085). Members have to produce their library membership card to get the reservation done. Reserved materials are kept at the counter for a period of three days.
Regional Centre Libraries
NISD Libraries are functioning in Anuradhapura, Ampara and Kilinochchi Branches
Inquiry Service
Academic inquiries are welcome from library users over the phone, email etc. Relevant Bibliographic information, printed or e-articles, books, etc. are supplied to users on their requests. Library users can forward their academic queries to the library by sending an email to inquiries-lib@nisd.ac.lk
Photocopying Facility
The photocopying service is available at the main library and regional centre libraries for the following rates.
A4 size single side – Rs. 9.00;
A4 size both sides – Rs. 10.00.
It should be noted that the facility is available for the students to copy from the library materials while strictly adhering to the copyright laws.
