Gender Equality Awareness Workshop

The primary objective of the Gender Equality Awareness Program conducted on 31 July 2024 and 01 August 2024 was to create awareness about gender equality among school students in the Sooriyakanda Divisional Secretariat Division. The program aimed to empower students with knowledge about the importance of gender equality, respect for diversity, and equal opportunities for all genders. By focusing on the younger generation, the initiative sought to encourage a more gender-sensitive mindset and promote a culture of respect and equality within and beyond the school environment.
The program helped to educate students about the basic concepts of gender equality, showing them how to recognize and challenge gender biases and stereotypes prevalent in society. The program contributed to building more gender-sensitive communities by equipping students with the knowledge and skills to address gender inequality in their daily lives. This can have a long-term positive impact on reducing gender-based discrimination and violence.
Dr. Ravindra Withanachchi, Director General of the National Institute of Social Development (NISD), along with the active participation of several members of the (NISD) academic staff and the Director of the Center for Gender Studies, added academic rigor and expertise to the program.
