The Training Division, established in 1974, is one of the four integral components of the organizational structure of the National Institute of Social Development (NISD). Initially this division was engaged in the training of the staff from various institutions sent by the Ministry of Social Empowerment and Welfare.

Over the years the concept of social service & welfare services has broadened beyond the original concept of charities and corrections to the concepts related to the needs, adjustments and adaptations of human beings in a wider range of social situations. This led to a paradigm shift within NISD, moving away from the concept of custodial care to a concept focusing instead on development.

As a consequence, fresh requests for training in development related themes began to come in, not only from the Ministry of Social Empowerment and Welfare but also from other institutions engaged in the field of development. Moreover, many of the new requests were for training outside the offices of NISD. These were identified by the NISD as out-reach training programmes wherein the training division agreed to conduct training programmes for clients in their regional locations.

Requests are made frequently by the government, provincial councils, non-governmental organizations and the private sector to conduct custom designed sponsored programmes to meet the requirements of their clientele. The Training Division has been successful in conducting several of those requested programmes.
All programmes conducted by the Training Division are supplemented with a field education programme. The length of the field programme varies on the basis of the nature of the study/training programme.

The Training Division became an independent department in 2004. It is one of the four integral components of the organisational structure of the National Institute of Social Development (NISD). It functions under the Director of the division. At present, two training officers’ grade I and seven training officers grade II are working within the division.
