
Five day short-term training programme
The National Institute of Social Development (NISD), the pioneer institute in Social Work and Psychological Counselling education in Sri Lanka, successfully conducted a five-day training programme on Stress Management and Counselling Skills for police officers representing the Negombo, Kelaniya, and Gampaha Police Divisions.
The training programme was held from 09th to 13th February 2026, with the participation of 60 police officers. The programme was organized and facilitated by the Training Division of NISD, aiming to enhance the psychological wellbeing, emotional resilience, and basic counselling competencies of police personnel who serve on the front lines of community safety and law enforcement.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by Professor Premakumara de Silva, Director General of NISD. The event was further honored by the presence of SSP Mr. Bimal Perera, representing the Negombo Police Division, and Ms. V. Vasudevan, Additional Director General of NISD. Their participation highlighted the importance of strengthening mental health awareness and counselling capacities within the police service.
This initiative reflects the significant national contribution of the National Institute of Social Development toward human resource development and psychosocial wellbeing in Sri Lanka.
